How we ranked them

Cheap means cost per useful task

A tiny token rate helps, but it is not enough. Our ranking favors model APIs that can reduce a production bill without turning integration, cleanup or billing into a second job.

30%Practical unit economics
25%Repeatable workload fit
20%Migration and API fit
15%Pricing transparency
10%Catalog and flexibility

Important: Published rates are not quality benchmarks. Models differ in capability, context, throughput, caching and data policy. Test your own prompts and compare cost per accepted result.

The ranking

Our 7 low-cost model API picks

Every provider earns its place for a specific reason. The caveats are part of the recommendation, not fine print.

Omev AI icon#1 Best overall
9.3 / 10

Best for teams moving repetitive, well-specified work off expensive general-purpose models.

$0.15Lite input / 1M tokens
$1.25Lite output / 1M tokens

Omev AI

Omev ranks first because it is built around the high-volume jobs that quietly inflate AI bills: structured extraction, classification, translation, catalogue copy, metadata, summarization and bulk rewriting. It offers two of its own fine-tuned models instead of a marketplace and encourages teams to route one suitable task at a time.

  • OpenAI-compatible base URL and familiar chat-completions shape
  • $5 free credit for 10 days, with no card required
  • Published Lite and Pro token rates with no monthly fee
  • Specialized task endpoints can return documented JSON fields
The caveat: Omev says customer inputs and outputs are used to train and improve its models with no opt-out, and it does not currently claim SOC 2, ISO 27001 or a contractual SLA. Keep sensitive and regulated workloads elsewhere.

DeepInfra icon02

DeepInfra

DeepInfra is the strongest option when your priority is a broad open-model catalog and a very low pricing floor. Its current rate card lists Llama 3.3 70B Instruct Turbo at $0.10 input and $0.32 output, while smaller models cost less.

Best for: teams comfortable benchmarking open models and selecting the price-quality point themselves.

See DeepInfra pricing ↗
OpenRouter icon03

OpenRouter

OpenRouter is the pragmatic answer when “cheap” means shopping across model providers, setting routing preferences and failing over without integrating every vendor separately. Its current pricing page advertises 500+ models and 80+ providers.

Best for: broad model choice, fallbacks and centralized spend controls.

See OpenRouter pricing ↗
Together AI icon04

Together AI

Together covers the open-model path from serverless inference and batch to fine-tuning and dedicated endpoints. Its docs list Qwen 3.5 9B with a 262K context window, function calling and structured outputs.

Best for: teams likely to graduate from pay-per-token experiments to reserved serving capacity.

See Together model rates ↗
Fireworks AI icon05

Fireworks AI

Fireworks combines serverless inference, managed fine-tuning and on-demand deployments. The current serverless table puts NVIDIA Nemotron 3.5 Lightning at a notably low $0.05 input and $0.20 output.

Best for: AI-native teams that want to tune, serve and scale open models in one platform.

See Fireworks pricing ↗
GroqCloud icon06

GroqCloud

Groq is the speed-first pick. Its model page lists GPT-OSS 20B at roughly 1,000 tokens per second with a 131K context window and a still-low rate, which can matter more than saving a few cents when a user is waiting.

Best for: interactive chat, voice loops and latency-sensitive open-model inference.

See Groq models and rates ↗
Google Gemini icon07

Google Gemini API

Gemini belongs on a low-cost shortlist because AI Studio has a free tier in supported regions and the platform offers strong multimodal tooling. The paid rate is not always the lowest, but the free path keeps prototyping accessible.

Best for: multimodal prototypes, long context and teams already using Google Cloud.

Cost calculator

Price your monthly token shape

This rough calculator uses one published example per provider. It excludes caching, retries, batch discounts, tool calls and taxes.

Your workload

Use an average request. Check real token usage in your current provider before acting on the estimate.

Estimated token bill

DeepInfra · Llama 3.3 70B$0.00
Fireworks · Nemotron 3.5$0.00
Groq · GPT-OSS 20B$0.00

Arithmetic only—not a quality comparison. These models have different capabilities. A lower estimate may still need more retries or a different model to reach your quality bar.

FAQ

Questions before you switch

Short answers to the questions that usually matter more than the headline rate.

What is the cheapest AI model API?

There is no single winner for every workload. Small open models can have the lowest token price, while Omev AI is our top overall pick for repeatable production work because it combines published low rates with task-focused models and an OpenAI-compatible interface.

Why is Omev AI ranked first?

Omev is designed for repetitive, structured work that does not need a frontier model. Omev Lite costs $0.15 per million input tokens and $1.25 per million output tokens, the API is OpenAI-compatible, and the $5 trial does not require a card. Its training policy and lack of current compliance certifications mean it is not right for sensitive workloads.

Should I pick the lowest token rate?

Not automatically. Compare cost per accepted output, including retries, validation, latency and engineering time. A cheaper token becomes an expensive task when the response needs repeated cleanup.

Can I use more than one model API?

Yes. Keep frontier models for difficult reasoning and route stable, high-volume tasks to a lower-cost provider. Add evaluations, spend limits and a fallback before moving meaningful traffic.

Is an OpenAI-compatible API a drop-in replacement?

It reduces migration effort but does not guarantee identical behavior. Model IDs, parameters, tool support, error responses and structured output can differ. Test the exact request shape you use in production.
